Lodi Police screened over 1000 drivers during the DUI/Driver's License checkpoint on 07/02/10

Officers of the Lodi Police Department conducted a DUI/Driver’s license check point starting on 07/02/10 7:00 pm and ending on 07/03/10 2:00 am. The check point was conducted on Cherokee Lane between Poplar and Vine Streets. This area was selected due to the high number of DUI arrests on Cherokee Lane.
The check point was funded by an Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) grant.

During this time period officers screened 1,065 motorists. Of those screened, 10 subjects were arrested. Six were for DUI, 2 for outstanding arrest warrants, 1 for resisting arrest, and 1 for battery on a police officer.

Forty four (44) motorists had their vehicles towed. Thirty seven (37) of the cars towed were impounded for 30 days due to the driver being unlicensed or had a suspended license. This also means that these motorists typically do not have any insurance.

While the check point was in operation a suspect (Larry Quihuiz) drove into the screening lane, but quickly accelerated over the traffic cones and drove at two police officers during his attempt to flee. Police officers in patrol cars attempted to stop Quihuiz, but he refused to stop. Officers pursued Quihuiz through Lodi for approximately 20 minutes until he was finally apprehended. Quihuiz was charged with Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Evading arrest, Warrants, reckless driving, and DUI Drugs/Alcohol.

One suspect was arrested for Battery on a Peace Officer when he refused to get out of his vehicle. Officers determined the driver, Ruben Avalos (07/15/75), was unlicensed so they told him to get out of the vehicle. Avalos refused and punched an officer in the stomach. Avalos was arrested and charged with Battery on a Police Officer, Driving while Unlicensed, and Illegal Entry into the United States. He was previously deported, but has obviously returned illegally according to ICE agents. A photo of Avalos is not available.

An unlicensed 17 year old juvenile refused to identify himself while driving a vehicle. He was arrested and charged for Driving while Unlicensed and Obstructing a Police Investigation.

Another suspect was arrested for DUI and had a .33 blood alcohol content, the highest of the evening. And, three separate motorists drove through the check point only wearing underwear. The 3 individuals didn’t know each other and there was no reason given why they were dressed in this manner.

The Lodi Police Department will conduct more of these check points in the near future. The goal of the Lodi Police Department is to reduce the number of people driving under the influence of alcohol and reduce DUI related collisions; making our roadways safe.
