Drowning in Petersburg

On Tuesday, August 30, 2010 at approximately 3:10 p.m. emergency crews were dispatched to the Ohio River in Petersburg, Kentucky for a reported drowning of a Petersburg man who was out in a boat with his brother-in-law when he jumped from the boat but didn’t resurface.

Charles Slagle, 41 of Petersburg, Kentucky reported he and his brother-in-law, Mike Fugate, 48 also of Petersburg were going up river in a small john boat in the vicinity of the Carroll Cropper I-275 Bridge when Mike jumped overboard and didn’t resurface.

Personnel from the Boone County Sheriff’s Department, Boone County Emergency Management, Boone County Water Rescue, Dearborn County (Indiana) Water Rescue, Hebron Fire Department, Petersburg Fire Department, Erlanger Fire Department, Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department, and the U.S. Coast Guard searched the river and river bank for Fugate.

Using side scan sonar, the Dearborn County Water Rescue and the Boone County Water Rescue located a possible target at 5:30 p.m. Then utilizing a remote operated vehicle along with drop cameras they were able to determine the target to be human. Finally, a diver was able to retrieve the body at 10:30 p.m. Family members positively identified Fugate when he was brought ashore at 11:00 p.m.
