Burlington County Sheriff's Department Advisory- Recent Scam.

The Burlington County Sheriff’s Office is advising citizens to be wary of the latest mail scam which poses as a large cash jackpot. The solicitation comes as a letter from Canada and includes a check alleged to be a portion of the prize. So far, at least two people in Burlington County, in Medford and in Pemberton Township, have almost been taken in by the scam. In the Pemberton Township case, an unidentified 83-year-old woman from the Browns Mills section received a letter claiming she had won $250,000. The envelope included a $2,500 check marked as a partial payment. The woman followed instructions in the letter to deposit the check and call a phone number included in the envelope. The person on the other end instructed the woman to wire $2,400 to Spain to claim her prize. When she hesitated, the person became agitated and the woman realized it was a con. The check she deposited in her account later bounced.
