18 year-old Good Samaritan Thwarts Robbery -
SMPD Arrests Three Suspects in Robbery and Intimidation Incident

On May 13th , at about 7:15 pm, numerous SMPD Officers responded to the area of Monte Diablo and Kingston Street in North Shoreview on a report of a fight and possibly a robbery in progress. Upon the officers’ arrival, several subjects were contacted over an area spanning the entire unit block of North Kingston Street. Two young adult males were located in the immediate area, and two additional adult males were located at the opposite end of North Kingston. Six teenage juveniles (four males and two females, ranging in age from 13 to 16) were located in the area as well. Four had been hiding - locked in a bathroom in a Laundromat on the same block - and the other two were located nearby.

SMPD Patrol Officers and SMPD’s Neighborhood Response Team (Gang Unit) patiently and carefully investigated and interviewed the involved parties. They were able to determine that Suspect Fredy Gonzalez was in the process of traversing the Monte Diablo Pedestrian Overcrossing (POC) when he confronted the six juveniles. Gonzalez intimidated and physically assaulted the juveniles, and took items from them. The incident was interrupted by an 18 year-old good Samaritan, who also happened to be crossing the POC. The Good Samaritan distracted Fredy Gonzalez long enough for the juveniles to escape.

Gonzalez summoned two of his associates, Jose and Victor Godinez. They located four of the juveniles as the juveniles fled into the Laundromat and locked themselves into a bathroom. Jose and Victor Godinez punched holes in the locked door, and shouted threats at the juveniles. The juveniles were so terrified that they attempted to crawl through the ceiling to escape.

Suspect Fredy Gonzalez, 20, of San Mateo was arrested and booked into San Mateo County Jail on charges of Assault and Robbery.

Suspect Jose Godinez, 20, of San Mateo was arrested and booked into San Mateo County Jail on Making a Public Challenge to Fight, Vandalism, and Criminal Threats

Suspect Victor Godinez, 19, of San Mateo was arrested and booked into San Mateo County Jail on Making a Public Challenge to Fight and Criminal Threats

SMPD recognizes that the actions of the good Samaritan in this case were brave and certainly assisted in preventing further crime at that moment. However, SMPD advises that community members use caution in such incidents and be “good witnesses.” Provision of timely and accurate information in cases like the one above are critical to our prompt response. Please contact SMPD if you notice suspicious or criminal activity.

As a reminder – always be aware of your surroundings, and be prepared to call SMPD.
