Benicia PD to celebration National Night Out Tuesday, August 2nd (Date Correction, Original stated Tuesday, August 1st)

The Benicia Police Department announces the 28th Annual National Night Out event will be held on Tuesday, August 2, 2011 from 6:00-9:00 p.m.

This national event encourages local Neighborhood Watch groups across the country to participate by hosting special events in their neighborhoods. The event is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime programs; strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

Along with traditional display of outdoor lights and front porch vigils, neighborhoods are encouraged to celebrate by coming together to host outdoor potlucks, BBQ's, ice cream socials and activities for the kids.

Last year over 10,000 communities across the United States and Canada participated in the National Night Out event. The event has proven to be an effective, inexpensive and enjoyable program to promote neighborhood and police-community partnerships in our fight for a safer nation.

Locally, the Benicia Police Department has over 30 Neighborhood Watch groups registered with the Police Department and this year there will eight neighborhoods participating by hosting a block party in their neighborhoods. "We have several active neighborhood watch groups that will be participating this year," Benicia Police Department Neighborhood Watch Program Coordinator Patti Baron said. "Those Neighborhood Watch groups are on the 400 block Panorama Drive; Cooper Drive/Byron Court; Shannon Court; Buena Vista; 400 block East K Street; 500 block Vecino Drive; Heather Court; and Eastland Estates."

The Benicia Police Department along with the Benicia Fire Department, City Council members and members from BERT (Benicia Emergency Response Teams) will be visiting the participating neighborhoods to interact with local residents and thank them for their participation.

"Our Neighborhood Watch groups epitomize the outstanding relationship between their police department and the community," Benicia Police Chief Andrew Bidou said. "Each year we participate in this event as a way to thank our residents for helping to keep our city the safest in Solano County."
