Benicia Police Department / Youth Action Coalition Sponsors Middle School Anti-Bullying Student Assembly

In conjunction with the Benicia Police Department and the Benicia Youth Action Coalition, the Benicia Middle School will kick off a week long Anti-Bullying student awareness campaign from October 3rd to October 7th. The Middle School will feature various anti-bullying awareness activities for their students throughout the week.

On Tuesday, October 4th , three student assemblies will take place presented by nationally known anti-bullying expert speaker Cary Trivanovich. The Benicia Police Department and the Benicia Youth Action Coalition are sponsoring these assemblies.

Trivanovich's middle school assembly program is a mix of his eccentric comedy/pantomime, followed by his message. According to his website, the reaction Cary receives with his performance and consequently the respect he receives with his message must be seen to be believed. Cary's website is www.carytrivanovich.com

Cary's message is not designed to educate about bullying, although it does that, but rather to affect the hearts of the students about sensitivity and the well being of others. Whether about students who are mistreating others through ignorance, how they are acting, or about serious staunch bullies, Cary's message speaks to the heart of each student.

"The purpose of this week-long focus on bullying is to reach out to students and provide them with the tools to deal with situations," Benicia Middle School Vice Principal Lindsay Dalske said. "The week includes various activities through the Safe Schools Program, student skits, trivia games and classroom discussions. The three assemblies would not be financially possible for the school if it was not for the sponsorship from the Benicia Youth Action Coalition."

Patti Baron, the Coordinator for the Benicia Police Department's Youth Action Coalition stated "The Coalition is able to provide the financial backing through their Solano County Board of Supervisors ATOD grant funding. The partnership between the Coalition and the County provides money for a number of the Benicia Unified School District's anti-drug, alcohol and substance abuse programs. We are pleased to support this unique Anti-Bullying assembly presentation by Mr. Trivanovich. His message relates directly to the students in a fun, humorous way, while getting an important message across."

"As adults who protect children, we understand the damage bullying and other negative juvenile interactions have on the kids and how it can affect their lives in the future," Benicia Police Lt. Mike Daley said. "The leadership of the school district in organizing this week and the ability of the police department to help fund the assembly program will hopefully go a long way in giving all the children some tools to better their interactions and friendships with each other."
