BELVIDERE POLICE ARREST A SUBJECT IN GANG RELATED SHOOTING

BELVIDERE POLICE DETECTIVES ARE INVESTIGATING A GANG RELATED SHOOTING WHICH LEFT ONE SUBJECT IN THE HOSPITAL IN CRITICAL CONDITION.

ON FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 2012, AT APPROXIMATELY 10:00 PM, BELVIDERE PATROL OFFICERS RESPONDED TO A CALL OF GUN SHOTS BEING FIRED IN THE 500 BLOCK OF WEST MENOMINEE STREET IN BELVIDERE. OFFICERS ARRIVED AND FOUND AN 18 YEAR OLD MAN WHO HAD BEEN SHOT. THE VICTIM WAS TRANSPORTED TO ST. ANTHONY’S HOSPITAL WHERE HE REMAINS IN CRITICAL CONDITION.

HAROLD SWITZER, 18 YEAR OLD MALE OF BELVIDERE, ILLINOIS, WAS CHARGED WITH ONE COUNT OF AGGRAVATED DISCHARGE OF A FIREARM (CLASS 1 FELONY). SWITZER IS CURRENTLY BEING HELD IN THE BOONE COUNTY JAIL WITH NO BOND.

THE SHOOTING OCCURRED AFTER SEVERAL INDIVIDUALS HAD AN ALTERCATION AT A RESIDENCE LOCATED IN THE 500 BLOCK OF WEST MENOMINEE STREET, BELVIDERE. THE SHOOTING OCCURRED OUTSIDE THE RESIDENCE. SEVERAL PEOPLE WERE DETAINED BY PATROL INCLUDING THE ALLEGED SHOOTER. BELVIDERE POLICE DETECTIVES EXECUTED A SEARCH WARRANT AT THE RESIDENCE. BELVIDERE POLICE SEIZED SEVERAL HANDGUNS AND AMMUNITION FROM THE RESIDENCE.

THE INVESTIGATION IS ONGOING AND ADDITIONAL CHARGES AND/OR ARRESTS ARE POSSIBLE. A CLASS 1 FELONY IS PUNISHABLE BY FOUR (4) TO FIFTEEN (15) YEARS IN THE ILLINOIS DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS.

THE BELVIDERE POLICE DEPARTMENT ENCOURAGES ANYONE HAVING INFORMATION ON A CRIME, SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY OR NARCOTIC TRAFFICKING TO CALL THE BELVIDERE POLICE DEPARTMENT AT 544-2135 OR CRIME STOPPERS AT 547-7867.

Members of the public are reminded that these are only charges and are not proof of the defendant’s guilt. Every defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial in which it is the State’s burden to prove his or her guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
