LASD Deputy Involved Shooting in Lynwood, Kidnapping Suspect Deceased
Sheriff's Homicide Bureau Lieutenant Ed Hernandez reports that Los Angeles County Sheriff's Homicide Bureau detectives are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the Deputy Involved Shooting on the 11500 block of Atlantic Avenue, Lynwood, on Thursday, June 21 at noon.
Detectives have learned that deputies responded to the location regarding a kidnapping in progress call. The suspect was described as a male Hispanic with no shirt, wearing jeans.
Prior to their arrival witnesses saw the suspect trying to force a fifteen year old female Hispanic juvenile into his vehicle. When the victim was able to get away from the suspect's grasp, the suspect drove his vehicle to the west side of Atlantic Avenue, and stood in front of a local motel.
A suspect matching the description of the kidnapper put his right hand in his right front pocket, and charged at the first arriving deputy as she attempted to park her patrol car to handle the kidnapping call. Believing the suspect was armed and in fear for her safety, the deputy fired several rounds from her duty weapon, striking the suspect in the upper torso.
The suspect was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Several witnesses saw the kidnapping and the subsequent shooting. No weapon was recovered from the suspect. The deputy was not injured. The victim sustained minor injuries to her neck and chest area.
Preliminarily, detectives do not believe the victim and suspect knew each other.
Whenever a Deputy-Involved Shooting occurs involving Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies, and it results in a death, multiple independent investigations immediately begin at the scene. These include separate investigations by the Office of the Los Angeles County District Attorney and the Office of the Coroner, as well as investigations by Sheriff's Homicide Bureau and Internal Affairs Bureau. Attorneys with the Los Angeles Office of Independent Review also respond to the scene, and have full access to the facts known to the Sheriff's Department throughout every phase of these investigations. Once concluded, every aspect of the shooting is reviewed by the Sheriff's Executive Force Review Committee.
