Fatal traffIc collision media release

On Tuesday July 31, 2012 at about 7:00 A.M., the Santa Rosa Police Department responded to a report of a vehicle versus bicycle collision at the intersection of Fountaingrove Parkway and Thomas Lake Harris Drive in Santa Rosa. Upon arrival, emergency medical personnel determined the bicyclist had sustained major injuries and was deceased at the scene.  The driver of the involved vehicle was located at the scene and has been cooperating with the investigation. The bicyclist has been identified as Ruben Hernandez, 37 years of Modesto.  The driver of the involved vehicle has been identified as Adam Bigham, 22 years of Sebastopol.  
 
The preliminary investigation has determined that Hernandez was traveling westbound on Fountaingrove Parkway approaching Thomas Lake Harris Drive, near Round Barn Blvd.  Witness statements indicated that Hernandez was traveling at approximately 40 mph and was riding a short distance in front of westbound traffic.  Bigham had been driving a blue Chevrolet pickup eastbound approaching Thomas Lake Harris Drive and had entered the left hand turn pocket at the intersection.  Witness statements indicate that Bigham turned his vehicle into the path of the oncoming bicycle ridden by Hernandez, who struck the side of the truck.
