Butte Street Resident Scares Away Burglar

On Tuesday, August 14, 2012, at about 11:41am, a Butte Street resident surprised a suspected burglar who he found on his back deck. The suspect, described as a black male adult, late 30’s, stocky build, long hair (possibly in dreadlocks/corn rows), immediately fled north from the residence. Within two minutes of the call, officers from the Sausalito Police Department arrived on scene and set up a perimeter. Personnel from the Sausalito PD, Mill Valley PD, and Marin County Sheriff’s Office conducted an extensive 1 ½ hour search for the suspect but were unable to locate him. The suspect attempted but did not gain entry to the residence.
During a canvass of the area, police discovered that the suspect had attempted to gain entry into another Butte Street address. The suspect was unsuccessful in prying open a ground level window.
Police are asking for anyone who may have seen anyone matching the suspect’s description or any suspicious vehicles in the area to contact the Sausalito Police Department at 415-289-4170.
Safety Reminder
Even though burglaries of occupied residences are rare in Sausalito, the police are asking residents to keep doors and accessible windows locked. Burglaries of occupied homes pose a significant threat to the residents should a confrontation occur. Residents who believe that someone is in their home should lock themselves in a room and immediately call the police. Residents with children should gather up their family members and stay in the same location until police arrive.
The police department encourages residents to immediately report suspicious activity. Call 9-1-1 from your house phone or from your cellular telephone. Residents who are not sure if an incident is serious enough to warrant using 9-1-1 can call the business line at 415-289-4170.
