Storm Update

The Township of Verona is continuing to make progress with the cleanup of Hurricane Sandy.

As of 11:30am October 31, 2012

** Approximately 75% of the Township remains without power. Unfortunately, PSE&G does NOT give us any estimation of time as to when power will be restored. We ask that you NOT call the police department to inquire about power related issues unless it involves a safety issue such as reporting a power line down, wire arcing, etc. PSE&G can be reached at (800) 436-7734.

If your power is out, even though the rest of the street is out, we recommend that you call the power company and let them know. Since the power company restores circuits based on the largest number of customers first, the more information that they have, the better off you are.

** Most of the streets in town are passable. Please go slow when you are out driving since there are still a lot of branches and wires hanging.

** You may place your storm debris (branches and tree limbs only) at the curb for pickup by DPW. Pickup has begun, and will continue until announced otherwise. Please do NOT put leaves at the curb. The leaf dump continues to be open 7 days a week for leaf disposal.

** Garbage pickup has resumed on a limited basis starting Thursday Nov 1st. Some limitations on service may be caused by narrow roadways, as well as power issues at the incinerator that is utilized by the trash company.

** Recycling pickup will resume on a normal schedule starting Thursday November 1st.

** The Township and Bd. of Education ask that you NOT celebrate Halloween trick or treating tonight due to the continuing safety hazards caused by downed power lines. An alternative date will be set once we are satisfied that there are no storm related safety issues.

** Generator Safety – Please remember to keep ALL generators at least 10 feet from your home, and to keep the generator exhaust pointed AWAY from your home. It is also good practice to keep any windows and doors near the generator closed. These suggestions will help to keep dangerous exhaust gas from entering your home. Under NO circumstances should a generator be operated inside of a house or business, including attached garages.

** The Verona Board of Education will hold the meeting that was scheduled for October 30 on November 1. Private session will start at 7:30 pm and the public session at 8:00 pm. The meeting will be held in the Verona Town Hall Council Chambers.

We appreciate your continued cooperation and patience as we work together to restore our community.
