Results for the DUI/Drivers License checkpoint conducted Friday 06-07-13

The Costa Mesa Police Department conducted a DUI/Drivers License checkpoint on Friday, June 7, 2013, along northbound Newport Blvd at 17th Street between the hours of 8:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. Checkpoints are placed in locations that have the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence and provide the greatest safety for officers and the public.

DUI/Drivers License checkpoints lower DUI deaths and injuries. A major component of these checkpoints is the deterrent effect they have on those who might drive drunk or drug impaired, which brings about more awareness and encourages everyone to use sober designated drivers.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), checkpoints have provided the most effective documented results of any of the DUI enforcement strategies, while also yielding considerable cost savings of $6 for every $1 spent. This checkpoint resulted in the following:

2,072 Vehicles through the checkpoint
697 Vehicles screened
20 FST’s administered
6 DUI-Alcohol suspects arrested
0 DUI-Drug impaired suspects arrested
0 Drug suspect arrested
4 Drivers cited/arrested for operating a vehicle unlicensed
5 Drivers cited/arrested for operating a vehicle while suspended/revoked
0 Other citations issued (unrelated to unlicensed or suspended/revoked license)
0 Non-DUI arrests (warrants, felonies, etc.)
12 Vehicles stored or impounded

This checkpoint was funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
