"Distraction Burglary" on 6/13 at 4:30pm in the 200 block of S. Church St. Suspect claimed to be township worker.
On 6/13/13 at approx. 4:30pm Moorestown Police responded to a residence in the 200 block of S. Church St. to investigate what turned out to be a Distraction Burglary. These burglaries are historically committed by Transient Criminals. Officers found that the elderly resident answered his door to find an "olive skinned" male with a yellow hard hat and work shirt there claiming to be from the water department. The suspect lured the victim to a bathroom where he ran the water. While the victim was distracted, a second "olive skinned" entered the residence and ransacked a bedroom taking approx. $500 cash and a wallet. The victim became suspicious and observed the second suspect at which time they both fled the residence on foot. No vehicle was observed.
Residents should not let anyone into their residence without first asking for proper ID. All Township employees will have an official ID. These criminals typically target elderly residents. If you have a neighbor or family member who is elderly, please make them aware of this and the steps to take if approached. If you are suspicious, don't hesitate to contact Public Works at 235-3520 or contact the Police Department at 234-8300 to confirm the subject is legitimate. As always, Don't hesitate to contact the Police Department for any type of criminal activity in progress by dialing 911
