Orange County District Attorney's Office files charges against CM resident for Involuntary Manslaughter & Elder Abuse Causing Death

On July 3, 2012, at about 0219 hrs officers responded to 938 Azalea Dr. in regards to a medical aide call of a combative elderly female. Upon arrival officers made contact with Robert Dickerman who explained he lived with, and was the sole care provider for, his 80-year-old mother, Yoshiko. He explained that two days earlier he had assisted his mother with going to the bathroom. While she was seated on the toilet she slipped and had fallen to the floor. Robert attempted to help her up but she refused and was combative. Due to the combativeness of his mother Robert decided to let his mother lay on the bathroom floor for the next two days.

Officers went to the hallway bathroom and found Yoshiko lying in urine on the floor, in a fetal position, and in apparent physical distress. She was immediately treated by Costa Mesa Fire Paramedics and transported to Orange Coast Memorial Hospital. Yoshiko was found to be dehydrated and had several open sores on the left side of her body. The following day, 07-04-12, Yoshiko died at Orange Coast Memorial Hospital. An autopsy was performed, which revealed Yoshiko’s cause of death was due to sepsis.

A subsequent investigation by Costa Mesa Police Detectives revealed Robert was unemployed and had been caring for his mother since 2001. The home was in an extremely dirty and cluttered condition. Robert stated he was unable to clean the home because of his mother’s needs and his being her sole care provider. Detectives also learned that Robert was restraining his mother to her bed and a portable toilet, tying her in place on those items.

Costa Mesa Police Detectives presented this case to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office (OCDA) as a possible homicide. Due to the living conditions in the home, Yoshiko’s injuries, and Robert’s failure to render care, on 09-19-13 the OCDA filed the following charges against Robert Dickerman:

PC192(b), Involuntary Manslaughter, and
PC 368 (b)(1), Elder Abuse Causing Death

CMPD Detectives arrested Robert Dickerman at his home on 9-24-13. He was booked into the Costa Mesa Jail and later transported for booking into the Orange County Jail. His bail was set at 1-million dollars.

There is no additional information for release on this case.
