COSTA MESA POLICE DEPARTMENT RECEIVES TWO GRANTS TO HELP THEIR EFFORTS TO STOP DUI MOTORISTS AND PREVENT INJURY TRAFFIC COLLISIONS

The Costa Mesa Police Department has been awarded two grants totaling $169,000 from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS). These grants will fund a year-long program aimed at preventing deaths and injuries on our roadways through DUI checkpoints, special enforcement and public awareness efforts. The grants received by Costa Mesa will aid in the city’s ongoing effort to improve traffic safety and the quality of life. The Costa Mesa Police Department will use the grants to supplement current traffic enforcement staffing levels by funding these additional programs as part of an on-going commitment to keep our roadways safe through both enforcement and education.

Lieutenant Greg Scott, head of the Costa Mesa Traffic Safety Division states:

“The grants will assist in our efforts to deal with traffic safety, focusing on reducing and apprehending impaired drivers and reducing the number of persons killed and injured in traffic collisions. In recent years, California has seen a reduction in traffic fatalities. DUI fatalities specifically are at a modern day low, however, when you consider that in 2011, 774 persons were killed and 24,000 people were injured in alcohol and drug-impaired traffic collisions in California, that number is still too high. Those numbers represent someone’s mother, father, husband, wife, son, and daughter.”

In contrast, the City of Costa Mesa has experienced a significant rise in fatal traffic collisions in 2013, with six persons killed. Three of the fatal collisions were determined to be caused by drivers under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. In comparison, there were zero traffic fatalities in Costa Mesa during 2012.
