Vehicle vs. Bicyclist Major Injury Traffic Collision

Driver Shuja Haq reported that shortly before 5 am this morning, he was driving eastbound on Bay Street towards southbound Newport Blvd. Haq stated he turned right, in observance of a green overhead light for eastbound traffic, onto southbound Newport Blvd when he heard a loud noise. Haq immediately stopped his car just south of the intersection and discovered he had run over 44 year-old bicyclist Michelle Lounsbury who was trapped beneath his car.

Costa Mesa Police and Fire personnel arrived on scene. Fire personnel used emergency equipment to lift Haq’s car to enable personnel to remove Lounsbury who was transported by ambulance to the Intensive Care Unit at Western Medical Center, Santa Ana where she is currently being treated. Lounsbury is in critical but stable condition. She suffered a broken right arm, and facial and chest trauma from the collision.

The Major Accident Investigaiton Team (MAIT) responded to the location of the collision, and Haq was questioned by the Traffic Investigator. Haq, who was cooperative and showed no apparent signs of intoxication or impairment, was later released from the scene.

Haq was the sole occupant in the vehicle he was driving and the collision is currently under investigation. Any persons who may have further information should call CMPD Traffic Investigator Darren Wood at 714.754.5264.
