Non Injury Traffic Collision/Building Fire

LOCATION OF OCCURRENCE: 13791 Magnolia/Hewitt, Garden Grove

DATE/TIME OF OCCURRENCE: 4-10-14 at 1:00 a.m.

At 1:00 AM, officers were sent to an injury collision at Magnolia and Hewitt. Officers arrived and found a green Ford Mini-Van that had been traveling southbound on Magnolia north of Hewitt drifted out of its lane and collided with a telephone pole, shearing it off at the base. The vehicle continued southwesterly across the lawn in front of the apartment complex at 13791 Hewitt and then into apartment #1 at that complex. The vehicle caught on fire, which spread to the apartment building.

A resident in apartment #1, Jesus Dominguez (22-years-old), quickly went to the vehicle, removed the driver and took him to safety. Officers arrived and evacuated the four apartments in the building. None of the building occupants were injured in the crash and subsequent fire.

The driver, a 56-year-old male resident of Huntington Beach, was transported to UCI Medical Center where he is under observation. The driver apparently did not suffer any injuries from the collision, but the collision may have been caused by him suffering a medical incapacitation just before the collision. There is no indication that
alcohol/drugs were involved in the collision at this time.

With the rapid spreading of the fire around the vehicle and in the building, there is no doubt that Mr. Dominguez saved the driver’s life by pulling him out of the vehicle. As a result, Mr. Dominguez was issued a Chief’s Coin of Merit for his actions. Mr. Dominguez will be one of many citizens who have gone out of their way to assist others who will be honored at the next annual Chief’s Coin dinner early next year.

As a result of fire damage, apartment #1 was deemed uninhabitable by the Building Inspector. As a result, six residents from that apartment, including Mr. Dominguez, were permanently displaced. The other three apartments were found to be structurally sound and the residents were allowed to return to those apartment. The Red Cross responded to assist the initial evacuees and those residents unable to return to their apartment.
