Stolen Vehicle Suspect Arrested

On May 20th, shortly before 8 p.m., uniformed Costa Mesa Police Officer Stephanie Moore was patrolling the west side of the City when she received a LoJack “hit” notification on a display inside her police car. Moore immediately coordinated with nearby patrol officers to isolate the location of the stolen car, which was tracked in the vicinity of 19th Street and Wallace Avenue.

Officers located the unoccupied stolen Toyota Camry parked in the Auto Zone parking lot at 744 W. 19th Street. Costa Mesa Police Detectives attempted to detain 25 year-old Jay Bagramian, after he had unlocked the Camry using the vehicle’s key fob while nearby the vehicle. After a brief foot chase, officers arrested Bagramian, who later admitted he had stolen the car. Bagramian told officers he had stolen a backpack from an unlocked locker, earlier that day, from the 24-Hour Fitness gym at 555 W. 19th Street in Costa Mesa. Bagramian found keys to the Camry inside the stolen backpack. He was in the process of arranging to sell the stolen Camry to another individual prior to being arrested by officers.

Bagramian was booked at Orange County Jail in Santa Ana for grand theft auto and probation violation charges. He is currently being held on a no bail hold. Police made arrangements for the stolen Camry to be returned to its 73 year-old owner, a Costa Mesa resident.
