NDOT Plans Extensive Boulder Highway Corridor Pedestrian Safety Improvements

LAS VEGAS, NEV. -- The Nevada Dept of Transportation (NDOT) will be making several pedestrian safety improvements to the Boulder Highway (State Route 582) in 2016 and 2017. The 16.7-mile stretch of highway has seen 14 fatalities so far this year, including eight pedestrians and a bicyclist.

“Every death and serious injury on Nevada roads is a tragedy,” said NDOT spokesman Tony Illia. “We have consequently identified several areas along the Boulder Highway corridor for pedestrian and motorist improvements.”

NDOT next year will install an overhead rapid flashing beacon and Danish-offset median island at Boulder Highway and Sun Valley Drive, near the Eastside Cannery. The six-month project will also close left-hand vehicle turns, thereby eliminating pedestrian conflicts. Its part of $10 million in additional pedestrian safety improvements authorized by the Nevada State Transportation Board in early February. (NDOT dedicates approximately $21 million annually in federal funds to roadway safety projects and programs).

“The additional funding is an extension of the planning and projects which NDOT and our partners put in place each year to enhance safety and save lives,” said NDOT Director Rudy Malfabon. “Nothing is more important to us than the safety of our transportation system.”

NDOT will also be lowering the speed limit from 55-mph to 45-mph along a two-mile stretch of Boulder Highway from Galleria Drive north in early 2016. The department is additionally conducting preliminary engineering for pedestrian improvements along at least seven Boulder Highway crossings, including lighting, crosswalks, sidewalks, and median enhancements. However, construction won’t begin until 2017 due to funding and multi-jurisdiction coordination. (Boulder Highway passes through the City of Henderson, Clark County and City of Las Vegas).

“Tragically, we see that distraction often plays a large part in pedestrian crashes,” said Illia. “We want to remind everyone to share the road. Remember, safety is everyone’s responsibility.”

Driver Safety Tips:
Drivers should always yield to pedestrians in crosswalks, even if unmarked, and make eye contact. Look before turning on a green light and wait for any pedestrians crossing.

Pedestrian Safety Tips:
Pedestrians should always obey traffic control devices when crossing in the nearest crosswalk. Look left, right and left again when crossing. Make eye contact before crossing, and don’t be distracted by using or texting on your phone, or wearing ear-buds. Never allow young children to cross alone.
