City of Santa Ana Appoints Raul Godinez as City Manager

At their last meeting, the Santa Ana City Council appointed Raul Godinez as the new City Manager. Effective November 1, 2017, Godinez will serve as the chief administrative officer, where he will be responsible for the administration of all affairs of the City. Godinez, who previously worked for the City of Santa Ana as the Executive Director of the Public Works Agency, has over 30 years of experience in both the public and private sectors, and is a registered professional engineer in the State of California.

“After completing a comprehensive recruitment process, the Santa Ana City Council made a decision to appoint Raul Godinez as our next City Manager,” said Mayor Pro Tem Michele Martinez. “He is an experienced and proven professional in government for 30 years who will bring integrity, transparency, leadership, and teamwork to the City of Santa Ana. Raul brings a different style of leadership, which can help restore much of the instability we have recently experienced. We need someone with Raul’s skill set that will focuses on maintaining infrastructure while also balancing new development in the City. I am confident that Raul will take ownership of his role and results, and will work collaboratively to ensure success for our community,” she added.

“My time in Santa Ana is filled with great memories working alongside tremendously dedicated staff. I am excited to be rejoining the Santa Ana team and look forward to working collaboratively with the Mayor and City Council on their shared policy goals that will improve the quality of life throughout the City. My entire career has been dedicated to local government, where the sphere of government is closest to us and has the biggest impact on people’s lives. It is a privilege to continue my public service in Santa Ana,” said Godinez.

“Raul’s significant local government management experience, coupled with his resilient and adaptable leadership, will serve him well as our top public administrator. We’re excited to be working with him,” said Councilmember Vince Sarmiento.

Prior to his current role as the Director of Public Works for the city of Lynwood, Godinez served as the City Manager for the City of El Monte. He also held various positions with the cities of Oakland and Los Angeles, including Public Works Director of Oakland under then-Mayor Jerry Brown. He also served as Councilmember for the city of San Fernando from April 1994 to December 1998.

“Raul Godinez has proven to be a dedicated and committed leader,” said Councilmember Benavides. “I am confident he will be able to meet the ever-growing and diverse challenges of managing a complex organization,” he added.

“Raul brings a wealth of experience that will serve Santa Ana well,” said Councilmember Sal Tinajero. “He is an exceptional individual who is able to roll up his sleeves and understands the importance of managing relationships among and between a diverse set of stakeholders with differing views.”

Mr. Godinez will earn a salary of $285,000 a year plus medical and retirement related benefits. In addition, the employment agreement includes a $500 a month car allowance and $175 a month in bilingual pay. Initially, Mr. Godinez was also offered $24,000 in city-paid deferred compensation, which he declined.

Mr. Godinez was born and raised in San Fernando, CA, where he attended local schools. He received his undergraduate degree in Engineering from California State University, Northridge.
