SAPD Investigating Vehicle vs. Bicyclist Fatal Traffic Collision

Deceased Bicyclist: Name Release Pending Family Notification 54 Year Old Male

On 10/26/2017, at approximately 6:45 pm, officers responded to the scene of a vehicle vs. bicyclist traffic collision in the 100 block of West Columbine Ave.

Officers located the bicyclist who suffered major head trauma from the collision. The Orange County Fire Authority responded to the scene and transported the bicyclist to OC Global Medical Center with life threatening injuries. The bicyclist later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. Based on Investigators preliminary investigation it is believed the 54 year old male bicyclist was riding his bicycle northbound on the west sidewalk of the 3200 block of South Main Street. The bicyclist rode off the curb in a northeast direction into opposing traffic. According to witnesses, the bicyclist traversed east across the intersection of Main and Columbine. At the same time a 2005 Yellow Corvette travelling north on Main collided into the bicyclist in the intersection of Columbine and Main.

The driver involved in this collision remained at the scene and has cooperated with our investigation. The driver was licensed and he was not impaired by alcohol or drugs at the time of the collision. The bicyclist’s impairment, if any, is not known at this time. The SAPD Collision Investigation Unit is investigating the fatality.
