Neighborhood Watch Holiday SafetyTips

Happy Holidays to the Duarte Community!  Much like surrounding communities, the third quarter of 2017 ended with a slight property crime uptick equating to  an overall 7% increase. This unusual increase is attributed to citywide vehicle burglaries completed by early morning perpetrators who smash windows to gain access to valuables left in clear view.

With that in mind, Duarte Public Safety would like to remind our residents about key safety tips that can help keep the holidays bright and less stressful. As we prepare for the festive season, it’s never too early to think about those who don’t share the same giving spirit.  See the list of suggestions below.
What can I do to protect my street?
·         Be alert for unfamiliar people and sounds. Do not ignore sounds such as glass breaking and abnormal dog barking. If you see suspicious people in your neighborhood call Temple Station dispatch immediately (626) 285-7171.
·         If possible park your vehicle in a garage or within a gated front yard or driveway.
·         Park in well-lit areas and consider installing motion lights in your driveway.
·         If you have video surveillance, be sure to monitor it remotely for unusual activity.

  • Keep your car clean and take all valuables home including items stored in the trunk. Also, prevent identity theft by removing any documents from your car with personal information.
Holiday Travel

·         Ask a neighbor to watch your house and retrieve your mail while out of town.
·         Use automatic light timers to keep your home lit in the evening.
·         Use video surveillance and monitor it from a smartphone.
  • Notify the Duarte Public Safety Office (626) 357-7938 and schedule vacation checks.
Online Shopping
·         Always make arrangements with neighbors or relatives to retrieve a delivery when you are not home. If you can, have packages delivered to a location where someone is present.
  • Frequent online shoppers may also want to look into a digital lock box.
Always remember, DUI/Driver license checkpoints are more frequent during the holidays and will help to keep us all safe.  If you celebrate the season by giving, the Duarte Sheriff’s Satellite Station (next to Target)  is hosting its annual Toy Drive.  Bring new, and unwrapped toys in before Sat. December 9, 4:00 p.m. If you have questions call (626) 359-5671 ext. 316.
Wishing you and your loved ones a safe and happy holiday season!
