Fire Equipment: 3 paramedic engine companies, 1 truck company, 1 incident commander, and various support personnel

Damage Estimate: Contents: $2,000, structure: $2,000

Working smoke detectors: None

Narrative: Ventura City and County Fire units were dispatched to a reported structure fire at a single-family residence on 8th Street in the Montalvo area of Ventura. First responders arrived to find “smoke pouring from the house” as the reporting party had described to dispatchers. Firefighters entered the burning structure with hoselines and attacked the fire, successfully confining it to one bedroom. Although the fire was confined to a single room, smoke damage occurred throughout the residence.

All four occupants of the residence evacuated the structure safely, however two adults were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene. They were treated by Fire and AMR paramedics on scene, but were not transported to the hospital. Due to no working smoke detectors, the residents were not alerted of the fire. The cause of the fire was determined to be an electrical short-circuit and heat build-up from extension cords being used in the bedroom.

Ventura firefighters remind everyone to install and maintain an adequate number of smoke detectors in their homes to provide an early warning system of fire’s presence. Maintaining working smoke detectors in the home greatly reduces the risk of loss of life due to fire. Working smoke detectors save lives.
