Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department CERT program graduates a new cadre of CERT members in Val Verde.

Last night (May 14) Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station completed training a new cadre of CERT members in the unincorporated community of Val Verde. The course was at Val Verde Park and was hosted in partnership with Los Angeles County Parks and Recreation. Lead CERT Instructor Mr. Gary Scott and an experienced cadre of Sheriff’s Department CERT volunteer instructors provided seven evenings of the FEMA “All Hazards” CERT curriculum so community members can gain the knowledge and basic skills to be better prepared at home, work and establish family plans for emergencies and potential disasters. Students participated in a team environment and had classroom instruction as well as ‘hands-on” practical skills training sessions. Residents of the Town of Val Verde can easily remember being affected by the 1994 Northridge earthquake and understand how they can potentially be isolated with limited points of entry and exit routes into the town. The CERT course stressed the need for ways to enhance and discuss community preparedness efforts and the need for resiliency by encouraging the concept of neighbors helping neighbors. Additionally the instructor cadre incorporated members of the Los Angeles County Disaster Communications Service. These Sheriff Volunteers enhanced the course with exposing the class to the benefits of using amateur radio for their CERT operations. Radio communications was blended in the final exercise where all the students where challenged in serveral training areas ranging from triage, medical treatment and light search and rescue. Mr. Greg Kimura, President of the Val Verde Civic Organization attended the CERT Course and he expressed along with others from the class a commitment to continuing their communities’ efforts to have follow-up training, meetings and encourage others to take a CERT course and keep preparedness efforts at the forefront of Val Verde’s priorities.
