Officers wrestled with combative juvenile theft suspects who attempted to remove one officer’s sidearm during the struggle.

On Tuesday, 10-15-13, shortly before 2:30 p.m., Costa Mesa police officers responded to Ralph’s market at 380 E. 17th Street regarding a shoplifting incident involving several “uncooperative, hostile” subjects. The first officer to arrive observed a male and female suspect physically fighting with Ralphs Loss Prevention and store employees near the cash register area at the front of the store. The police officer physically separated the female from the group of employees and handcuffed her to help stabilize the situation. While seating the female, a second female suspect came behind the male police officer and forcibly tried to pull and remove his handgun from his duty belt holster.

An off-duty female Orange County Sheriff’s deputy, who happened to be in the store, assisted the Costa Mesa officer physically restrain and handcuff the second female suspect who had just attempted to take his handgun.

The Costa Mesa officer then grabbed a nearby uncooperative male suspect who punched the officer in the face. A second Costa Mesa police officer arrived, and both wrestled with the combative male on the ground to gain eventual control of the subject. Other officers arrived, and a fourth male juvenile theft suspect was taken into custody.

One Costa Mesa police officer sustained a bruise and laceration below his right eye. He received stitches at Hoag Hospital and was later released. The suspects, all later identified as local resident juveniles, had reportedly attempted to forcibly steal liquor from the market. The juveniles were pre-booked at the Costa Mesa Police Department in preparation for later booking at Orange County Juvenile Hall, with no bail, per the listed charges.
