Tips to help prevent or reduce the chances of being victimized by package delivery thieves.

The Costa Mesa Police Department would like to remind everyone that during the holiday season, especially this month of December, use caution when having packages delivered to your home.

Most packages delivered to residential customers are left at the customer’s door, even if no one is home to accept them.

Unfortunately, this brings out individuals who are looking for crimes of opportunity, as well as criminals who actually target delivery trucks in neighborhoods. To reduce the chances of being victimized by package delivery thieves, we offer the following reminders and advice:

■ Choose a shipping option that requires you to sign for delivery.

■ Check the delivery status online so you can try to be home when the package arrives. (Some retailers offer text messages to your cell phone to alert you when items have been delivered.)

■ On the expected day of arrival, post a note on your door asking the delivery service to leave the package with a trusted neighbor.

■ Arrange to have the package shipped to another location where someone can receive it.

■ Ask the delivery company to hold your package for customer pick-up at their local shipping facility.

If you do not receive your shipment on time, check with the company of origin and confirm that the delivery was made. If the item was delivered and you did not receive it, report the theft or loss to the original company, the shipping company, and to your local Law Enforcement Agency.

Many of these crimes occur during broad daylight. Be alert about suspicious behavior in your neighborhood. Call your local Law Enforcement Agency to report this type of suspicious activity (for CMPD 714-754-5255) or call 9-1-1 if you observe a crime in progress. If witnessing a theft, or any other crime, try to obtain as much descriptive information as you can about the vehicle and/or person. This would include the type of vehicle, its’ color, make/model and license plate info if possible. Providing descriptive information about the person or persons on foot or in the vehicle - age, hair color, clothing description and if possible, distinguishing features such as facial hair, tattoos, height, or anything else you think may also help officers identify and catch the suspects.

Although theft can occur wherever packages are delivered, we have recently noted a rise in these types of thefts on the east side. With your help in following some of the above listed tips, we can work together in the prevention of future thefts.
