In-progress Residential Burglary Arrest

At approximately 4:30 a.m. on Monday, February 10, Costa Mesa Police responded to a reported burglary that had just occurred in an apartment in Building-S at 2775 Mesa Verde Drive East. A male resident reported he had confronted an unknown male standing in the bedroom doorway of his apartment. The apartment was also occupied by his wife and two young children at the time. Upon yelling out at the intruder, the suspect ran from the apartment. It was subsequently determined the suspect had gained entry through an unlocked sliding glass door. The suspect was described by the victim as being a male Caucasian, about 20-30 years old, and wearing a light-colored shirt and blue jeans.

An arriving officer spotted a male who matched the suspect’s general description, near the victim’s apartment building. The subject, later identified as (arrestee) Dmitriy Rozhik, fled from the officer, and ran through the complex. During the foot chase, Rozhik ran through a small pond in the complex to avoid capture. Additional responding officers established a perimeter and searched for the subject, assisted by the Orange County Sheriff’s Department helicopter. Officers located and detained Rozhik. Rozhik then struggled with the officers, requiring the use of a Taser to subdue and control him. Rozhik was identified by the victim as the intruder he had seen earlier. Stolen property items belonging to the victim were found on Rozhik’s person. Several reported stolen items, which included electronics, were not immediately located.

Detectives and officers are continuing follow up investigative efforts in surrounding areas for outstanding stolen items possibly discarded by the suspect prior to his capture. Detectives conducting follow up learned another resident in the victim’s building had also scared off a male they observed entering through their sliding door. In addition, a male resident in Building-Y reported a male had briefly entered through his apartment before quickly leaving upon being confronted by the resident.

Detectives are also working to determine whether reported thefts from vehicles at 1555 Mesa Verde Drive East, during the same time period, may be connected to Rozhik and possibly others working with him. A Crime Scene Investigator examined the crime scenes for potential latent evidence to support additional charges against Rozhik and/or help identify whether other suspects were also involved.

Rozhik was arrested and transported to the Costa Mesa Police Department Jail and booked for residential burglary, possession of stolen property and resisting arrest. He was later transported to Orange County Jail, Santa Ana where his bail has been set at $50,000.

No photos or additional information is being released at this time, due to the ongoing nature of the investigation. Anyone with information regarding these crimes, or similar incidents, should contact Detective Bang Le at 714 754-5361.
