Malibu Search and Rescue Team Conducts Inter-Agency Training

 

 

The Malibu/Lost Hills Search and Rescue Team (MSAR) is considered one of the most prestigious in the state. A huge resource of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, the team of reserve deputies is on call year round and ready to rescue and retrieve injured hikers and vehicle occupants, or evacuate areas due to threats and natural disasters at a moment’s notice.  The dedication and preparedness of this team in unmatched throughout the county, and would not be possible without the training and education that the team puts themselves through each month.

Last month, the MSAR team conducted rescue training that involved coordination with the LA County Fire Department, State and National Parks and other LA County Sheriff’s rescue units. Training consisted of multiple rescue and retrieval scenarios with the goal of establishing and reinforcing cross communication with each other and with the other agencies involved. Although team members are required to complete regular training of all scenario types, communication and medical procedures are considered paramount to each drill.  Team training includes rescue rope systems, rappelling, climbing, snow and ice operations, swift water operations, helicopter operations, wild-land fire operations, search operations, and navigation and area intelligence.  In addition to regular training, all team members must obtain and retain a minimum medical training to the level of an EMT.

Whenever the Search and Rescue team is called upon, they are expected to be expert in navigating and traversing the terrain of the Santa Monica Mountains. The team works hard to secure the support and donations necessary to equip them with the gear needed to effectively provide rescue services to the Sheriff’s Department. Outfitted with rescue trucks, 4x4 vehicles, a mobile command post, quads, inflatables for water rescues, night vision equipment and medical materials, the MSAR team is a valuable asset to the Department, and is frequently called upon to assist other units within the LASD jurisdiction. Training like what the team participated in recently ensures that they are mentally and physically prepared to be summoned at any moment, and that their rescue abilities remain swift and efficient.
