Air Rescue 6 flight crew conducts hoist rescue w guidance of Dep Paul Franklin assisting w location of injured hiker

DATE/TIME: Monday, October 2nd, 2017

INCIDENT: Hoist Rescue

LOCATION: Santa Ana River Trail, Angelus Oaks

VICTIM: Scott Everett, 56 years old, resident of Redlands

SUMMARY: On Monday, October 2nd, 2017, at approximately 2:15 p.m., Scott Everett was riding a mountain bike on the Santa Ana River Trail with a family member. While on a steep portion of the trail, Everett was throw from the bicycle and suffered major injuries. Everett was unable to move and the family member called 911. That portion of the trail is several miles from any roadway and is very rugged. Deputy Paul Franklin and San Bernardino County Fire Department personnel were dispatched. Due to the circumstances and remote location, San Bernardino County Air Rescue 06 and Sheriff’s patrol helicopter 40-King-7 also responded.

The patrol helicopter, with Corporal Jon Anderson and Corporal Eddie Leon, arrived and began searching for Everett. After approximately 20 minutes, they located Everett underneath several large trees. It was obvious Everett needed to be hoist rescued based on the reported injuries and remote location. The crew of Air Rescue 06, with Sergeant Michael Gilley, Sergeant Dan Futscher, Fire-Captain Mark Murphy and Fire-Engineer Shane Leonhardt, arrived and were initially unable to locate Everett. The patrol helicopter had already departed to allow Air Rescue 06 into the area.

Deputy Franklin assisted and was able to contact the family member by mobile telephone. Deputy Franklin had the family member describe the direction Air Rescue 06 needed to fly to be directly over Everett. Deputy Franklin then relayed the information to the crew and was able to guide them into position.

Air Rescue 06 conducted a hoist rescue of Everett. Futscher lowered Murphy and Leonhardt. After a quick assessment, Everett was placed into a litter and hoisted into the helicopter.

Everett was flown to a nearby trauma center with non-life threatening injuries.
