The Delanco Police Department will have a zero tolerance policy with unsafe bicycle riding.

With the weather becoming warmer, the Delanco Police Department will be proactive with juveniles riding their bicycles in an unsafe manner / “swerving”. There were too many close calls reported last year of juveniles intentionally riding their bicycles while “popping” a wheelie in the roadway towards vehicles causing the vehicles to swerve. The Police Department wants to nip this unsafe behavior in the bud before it causes a serious injury or a fatally.

I am announcing the department will have a zero tolerance policy with unsafe bicycle riding, i.e. a person riding a wheelie down the middle of the street. When an Officer witnesses this type of activity, they are to cite the individual with the appropriate violation.
The violations are 39:14.1, 39:14.2 & Loc Ord. 270-5.B., which state - A person propelling or riding on a bicycle shall not ride other than upon or astride a permanent and regular seat attached thereto, nor shall he or she ride with his or her feet removed from the pedals or with both hands removed from the handlebars, nor shall he or she practice any trick or fancy riding in a street. No bicycle shall be used to carry more persons than the number of seats, securely fastened to the frame of the bicycle, with which the bicycle is equipped).

If a resident witnesses this type of unsafe bicycle riding but the officer does not, the resident can sign a complaint and the officer will assist them by identifying the violator(s) and walking them through the complaint process. But officers are to be proactive in looking for and acting on this potential life threating unsafe riding.
