A vigilant citizen helps deputies identify and arrest a burglary suspect

DATE/TIME: Friday, August 10, 2018 Time: 1:05 am

INCIDENT: Vehicle Burglary / Possession of Stolen Property

LOCATION: 31000 Block of Sierra Linda Street, Yucaipa

SUSPECT: Antonio Gomez, 25-years-old, Transient

VICTIM(S): Multiple Victims - Residents of Yucaipa, Redlands, Hemet, and possibly others

On Friday, August 10, 2018 at 1:05 a.m. the witness returned home from a late work shift and heard a vehicle door shut. The witness then observed the suspect, Antonio Gomez, setting a bag down in the street next to a family member’s car. The witness watched as Gomez checked door handles on vehicles on Sierra Linda Street, just north of Ridgecrest Lane. Realizing Gomez was attempting to steal from his neighbors, the witness confronted Gomez and chased him to the nearby Chevron Gas station, where Gomez locked himself in the bathroom.

Deputy Hagen responded to the call and made contact with the witness and suspect. Deputies detained Gomez without incident and found he was in possession of a shaved key, pen light, and a multi-purpose tool – all of which are commonly used for burglary. When deputies returned to the witness’s home, they found Gomez left behind a large rolling duffel bag. Inside the bag deputies located a large amount of property linked to victims from the 12000 block of 17th St, Yucaipa, and from victim’s who reside in Redlands and Hemet. So far, three victims have been contacted. Deputies located property believed to belong to several other victims, all of whom likely suffered from vehicle burglaries or thefts from unlocked cars.

Gomez was arrested and booked on vehicle burglary and stolen property charges. Gomez was transported to Central Detention Center for booking. Anyone with additional information is urged to contact Deputy J. Hagen at the Yucaipa Sheriff Station at (909) 918-2305. Callers wishing to remain anonymous are urged to contact the WeTip Hotline at 1-800-78-CRIME (27463).
