Citizens assist Yucaipa sergeant in apprehending a suspect who was resisting arrest

DATE/TIME: Thursday, August 9, 2018, at 9:25 p.m.

INCIDENT: Probation Violation, Possession of Controlled Substance, Under the Influence of Drugs, Resisting Arrest

LOCATION: 34800 Block of Yucaipa Blvd, Yucaipa

SUSPECT: Gregorio Martinez, 36-years-old, resident of Yucaipa

On Thursday, August 9, 2018, at 9:25 p.m., Sgt. Mark Ramirez was conducting patrol in the downtown area of Yucaipa when he noticed a male run away from him, through an alley and into an adjacent neighborhood. Ramirez continued checking the area and about 5-minutes later, saw the same subject walking in front of the AM/PM. Ramirez made contact with the subject who identified himself as Gregorio Martinez. Martinez showed signs of being under the influence of drugs and was found to be on felony probation. While attempting to conduct a probation search, Martinez refused verbal commands and started making movements toward his waistline. Martinez refused to cooperate and struggled against efforts to handcuff him. Several citizens observed Ramirez struggling with Martinez and tried to assist.

As the struggle continued, a citizen took control of Martinez's legs, allowing Ramirez to gain full control of Martinez's arms and handcuff him. No one was injured in the struggle. Ramirez located suspected Methamphetamine in Martinez' possession. Martinez was booked at West Valley Detention Center for being under the influence of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance, resisting arrest, and probation violation and is being held without bail.

The Sheriff’s Department and Ramirez appreciate the citizens who went above and beyond to help combat crime in their city. Ramirez stated, "It's refreshing to meet citizens who aren't afraid to take action, showing their support for law enforcement, and who truly care about the health of their city. Thank you for your help and support!"
