Deputies spent several days tracking down & arresting a suspect wanted for a hit & run collision with major injuries

DATE/TIME: January 15, 2019 /5:12 p.m.

INCIDENT: CVC 20001(A) Hit and Run with Major Injury

LOCATION: California Street and Eureka Avenue, Yucaipa

SUSPECT: Armando Gutierrez Ramirez, 41 years old, from Yucaipa

VICTIM: Timothy Works, resident of Calimesa

On Tuesday, January 15, 2019 at approximately 5:12 p.m., deputies responded to a traffic collision involving a passenger vehicle and motorcycle. The suspect vehicle, a white Toyota sedan, was stopped at the stop sign on Eureka Avenue. The victim vehicle, a red Yamaha motorcycle, was traveling north on California Street just south of Eureka Avenue. The suspect vehicle entered onto California Street as the victim was approaching Eureka Avenue. The two vehicles collided and the motorcycle rider was ejected into the roadway.

The suspect vehicle fled the scene. Several citizens witnessed the collision and were able to get partial license plates for the suspect vehicle. One citizen chased the suspect vehicle for several blocks before the suspect evaded the witness.

As Timothy Works was down in the roadway, he was struck by a second vehicle, the driver of which apparently did not see him due to heavy rain and bad weather. That driver remained on scene and is not likely to face any criminal charges.

Works sustained serious injuries, including multiple broken bones and internal injuries, and was taken to Loma Linda University Medical Center by ambulance. He is expected to fully recover from his injuries.

In the days that followed, an extensive investigation took place. Deputy D. Rodriguez and SSS J. Smith scoured hours of surveillance videos from the surrounding area. The suspect vehicle was captured on area cameras and, through footage, deputies confirmed the make and model of the suspect vehicle.

Using this information, and partial plates provided by witnesses, staff identified a possible suspect vehicle registered to a location very near the collision scene. Surveillance of the registered address turned up nothing. For several days, the vehicle was never at the location and no people were seen at the home.

On Friday, January 18, 2019 at 11:22 a.m., deputies located the owner of the vehicle at the residence. He was identified as Armando Gutierrez Ramirez. The car was still not present. Investigation at the home linked Ramirez to the collision and, with his assistance, deputies located the car, now hidden at a family member’s home in Calimesa. Physical evidence located on the vehicle positively linked it to the collision.

Investigators are asking that anyone who saw the vehicle being hidden or worked on at that location to contact the Yucaipa Sheriff's Station at (909)918-2305.

Gutierrez Ramirez was arrested and booked at Central Detention Center with bail set at $50,000.
